Bordering Countries of San Marino
San Marino is a small, landlocked country in Europe nestled between the borders of Italy and the Adriatic Sea. It is bordered by the regions of Emilia-Romagna and Marche in Italy to the north, east, and south. The entire country covers only 61 km² making it one of the smallest countries in Europe. It is also one of Europe’s least populated countries with a population just over 33,000 people according to recent estimates.
As San Marino is completely surrounded by Italy, it does not have any direct land borders with any other country. However, it does have maritime borders with Croatia in the Adriatic Sea which lies to its southeast. This border stretches for about 11 km from Rimini in Emilia-Romagna to Pesaro–Urbino in Marche. In addition to this maritime border, San Marino has a number of treaties with its neighbouring countries including Italy and Croatia which establish mutual cooperation and understanding between them. These treaties include agreements on civil protection, cultural activities, economic relations, and immigration matters among others.
